Wha-hey! So today I bought quite a few more shades of watercolor, and decided to try them out.

HOLY WISDOM: I got this advice from me mum, and it's so true: Raw Umber. It may look like the sickest shade on earth on its own, but it's like... the color of the gods in painting.

HOLY WISDOM VER 2.0: sketching before hand is for panssiieesss.

Yeah, no preliminary sketching here. Just straight paint. It took... 5-6 hours... around in there? And I could have touched it up with white acrylic, but I decided to just let it be, to just let it be. (actually it's more like a forgot and I was already scanning it.) Uh, photo reference used from the most recent Vogue magazine for a chanel sunglasses ad.

So... watercolor paper, van gogh watercolors, cotman brushes.

This is a beautiful piece, I love the reflection in the glasses and the expression in her face. Very well done!
wow, that's brilliant. For some reason i'm in love with the mucles on her neck, but the lighting is absolutly gorgeous too, specially on the glasses, and the way you picked up the highlights in her hair, it looks so defined, and the edge of the lips.
Can i ask you something? how do you manage to keep everything to crisp and sepparated, because whenever i try to paint with waters, they always bleed horribly, and i get a big soggy mess.
Oh well, really love your pic.
:)
Wow, great portrait!

Thanks! And in answer to your question, it could probably be a lot of things... here are some ideas:

+What kind of brushes are you using? The cheap ones in Crayola kits or ones like that pick up a lot of water and then just kind of... dump it on the paper. If you have nice brushes, you can control the flow of water a lot better.

+I've never been a big fan of the wet-on-wet technique, because that always causes things to bleed terrible too.

+Paper is another big one - make sure you're used watercolor paper, and not some sketchbook kind, because then the watercolor gets sucked into the thin layer of paper and spread everywhere. (and plus it wrinkles)

+Lastly, I think timing might be an issue... Some things you can blend and work with while they're still wet, but to keep things crisp, you really do have to wait until the previous layer has dried before applying a new one. Don't worry about blending, you can still pick up some of the previous coat's pigment when you apply a new color. If it's too dark, you can also always just thin it out.

I don't think paints are the issue... tube watercolors are nicer, but you can still get a good picture with simple watercolors if you just have the right paper and brushes. Hope that helps!
wow.. cool! painting without sketch! it's really awesome for someone like me :D

cool, thanks! that's a huge help. i think i'll try out some better paper, because i've been using a w/c sketchbook and it's been wrinkling a bit too, and i think i'll force myself to wait a bit more for the paint to dry between layers (i usually have the patience of a gnat, lol)
Anyway, thanks again!
:)
It´s an amazing picture! I love it!!!
