James Jean: A Question

Tue Dec 30, 2008, 1:46 PM
X-posted on my LJ

Okay: is it just me, or is anybody else sick of see James Jean draw/paint nothing except children with no faces?

Don't get me wrong, I idolize the guy. His painting technique is incredible and his life drawings are the ultimate that I aspire to. But seriously... For the love of God, draw something else! His child paintings are my least favorite. I feel like a lot of his older work (before he got into this blank-faced youth phase) is a lot better than what he's producing now.

Yes? No? I am very curious to know what other people think about this matter, so let me know!

New News

It's been a long time since I've said anything here, I know.

The year went well, despite the fact that I was really busy (as always). Engineering is... ehhhhh yeah. Takes up a lot of time.

Anyway, I was in Beijing, China for two weeks in May. It was an awesome trip and I learned so much about the people and culture there. It changed my perception on things in a way that I don't even think I fully realize yet. I've posted a large chunk of the photos I took online here: [link] , a few of which I've submitted as deviations here.

I'm taking a figure drawing class this summer, so expect some sketches uploaded here or in my scraps section. I'm really excited, I've always wanted to draw nude models!

WHAT THE...

THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA ARE NO LONGER ONE OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD?! They were the only one of the original 7 left!

[link]

This totally bamboozles me. The Colosseum is on there, but not the Pyramids of Giza?! Totally ridiculous. Look at what tourism and popular voting has done.

EDIT: Oh, okay, they designated it an "Honorary New7Wonders Candidate" that you couldn't even vote for. Mostly just because Egypt got totally miffed and complained in regards to why the pyramids even had to run in the competition considering their status.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the positive feedback on Laconic Petals! I really appreciated it... I haven't heard much from people in terms of comments for a while, so I was happy to know that I've still got a few people cracking open an eye for my work every once in while.

Since it seemed that a lot of people were interested in how my submission went, I thought I'd mention it here. Unforunately, I didn't win. Actually, I was eliminated from the running pretty early in the beginning, much to my dismay. But hey, that's art, what can you do. I was hoping that the staff of the literary magazine would choose a more mellow/sombre cover because they had done some really bright/contrasty/photomanip stuff for the past few years, but alas! That is not the case. Photomanipulation won once again over traditional media.

I was a little depressed at first, but now I'm over it. What can you do? I really like how it came out, so that's enough.

In other news, I am almost done with IB! Freedom is close at hand, and that means more artwork. I feel that I haven't gotten any better since December 2005 and I'm really hoping to change that. Soon. We shall see, we shall see!
