James Jean: A Question

Tue Dec 30, 2008, 1:46 PM
X-posted on my LJ

Okay: is it just me, or is anybody else sick of see James Jean draw/paint nothing except children with no faces?

Don't get me wrong, I idolize the guy. His painting technique is incredible and his life drawings are the ultimate that I aspire to. But seriously... For the love of God, draw something else! His child paintings are my least favorite. I feel like a lot of his older work (before he got into this blank-faced youth phase) is a lot better than what he's producing now.

Yes? No? I am very curious to know what other people think about this matter, so let me know!

I think its supposed to be symbolistic in a way. A lot of his Fables covers have children with faces if you picked up the new book he produced with the all the covers done.

But out of just opinion probably just a phase he's going through like most artists do.

I don't even know the blank faces ones. I just was enamored with his sketchbooks and that's what I love so much. There's one painting of the girl with the maze/hoop that I love love love, but yeah I don't remember the blank faces so I can't help you out too much here...

Baby lovins, I want to see some more of your pretty arts!!

I understand what you mean, but I'm not too bothered by his current subject matter. What bothers me is James Jean as the ideal. He's an amazing illustrator and fine artist, but I feel like people get so blinded with how skilled he is, that every other artist falls by the wayside. If it doesn't look like something James Jean would do, it's not as good.

At least that was a problem for a while at my school. Everyone was so busy trying to be James Jean, all the other cool artists and art styles were virtually ignored.

(sorry if this posts multiple times, I have a bad internet connection.)

I totally see what you're saying. I've definitely noticed that phenomenon as well: little "James Jeans" are turning up all over the internet. You can almost immediately spot the influence as soon as you see someone else's work. And definitely, I'd like to see something new. His style is great, but I only want to see so much of it. It's a shame that other unique styles of artwork have been eaten up and spit out during this phase. Variety is the spice of life!

Yeah, I thought it might just be a phase too... But it's definitely been over a year now (maybe 2?), and it shows no signs of waning.

His Fables covers are actually refreshing just because they don't always focus on people without faces. I look forward to seeing them, because he actually draws adults/children with expressions a decent amount of the time. It's the work he produces in his free time or for shows that's starting to seem redundant to me.
